Course Overview
The Beginners Curriculum is designed to welcome young children (Ages 5+) and newcomers into the exquisite, highly structured world of Bharatanatyam. Under the mindful guidance of our faculty, students are introduced to the structural posture (Aramandi / half-squat) that defines the architecture of this classical art form.
We focus on physical posture alignment, initial flexibility training, and fundamental coordination of hands and eyes, ensuring that students develop correct, lifelong mechanical habits right from their first class.
Core Syllabus Modules
- Foundational Posture: Proper execution and stabilization of the Aramandi (half-squat) and Muzhumandi (full-squat) postures.
- Basic Adavus (Steps): Rigorous practice of the first series of footwork including Tatta Adavu (striking), Natta Adavu (stretching), and Paraval Adavu.
- Mudras (Hand Gestures): Learning the Asamyuta Hastas (28 single-hand gestures) with their authentic Sanskrit nomenclature and symbolic meanings.
- Rhythmics (Tala): Introduction to the basic rhythmic cycles (Adi Tala / 8 beats) and counting methods using claps and finger counts.
- Expressive Beginnings: Creative exercises designed to build initial facial mobility and dramatic storytelling confidence (Abhinaya).
What to Expect
Classes are structured to combine intense physical movement with artistic storytelling. The first 20 minutes are dedicated to strength-focused joint warm-ups (ankle mobility and core balance) to prepare the body, followed by 60 minutes of rigorous Adavu practice, and concluding with 10 minutes of hand gestures, theoretical storytelling, and cool-down stretches.
